Ever have one of those days where you just want to put on a fedora, kick up your legs on a desk, and drink your preferred cup of whatever? Listen to some slow jazz music in the back while you wait for the inevitable client to come running in to plea for help? Maybe they’re intending to shoot you while you’re unarmed? Maybe both?
Keep the cool ‘tude, detective. One thing we can all say is if you keep the facade you don’t care and can look straight down the line into the eyes of your attacker, you’re in for a long work life of investigations and attractive, antagonizing, maybe temporary allies.
It’s not too often we get to see written Noir work in our diverse community. That or maybe you’ve seen plenty and I’m just terrible at looking. Whatever the case may be, let me introduce you to the tantalizing tale of the Undercity and criminal enterprise exploitation, “Maryland Wolf Detective Agency” written and still being developed by Vixyyfox.

As with any good fashioned Noir tale, we begin with a quick introduction who the big detective guy is. Tate Maryland; rough-and-tumble, edgy, a little crass here and there, you know, the usual. Investigating a cry in the alleyway leads to a finding of Rotten Rodney- an underling to a notorious crime boss, and Lemon Fox- the charismatic vixen carrying some history with Mr. Maryland.
The first chapter is a bit on the fast side. One scene Tate’s reminiscing with Lemon, the next the two of them are in Maryland’s office planning to invade a crime boss’ hideout. Then before you know it, guns are blazing and grenades are thrown. In a way, the quickened pace of an introduction is rather refreshing. After the first chapter Vixyy slows it down a little bit to a more manageable speed, so don’t you worry one bit if it’s too much at first.
The handful of chapters to follow involve a case with Tate pursuing an ambiguous note left behind by an up-coming famous artist found dead. We’re met with mob bosses, persistent police units, romance, fly-or-die choices, betrayal, dark motives- all the necessary ingredients to keep you on your seat and wanting more!
Each chapter provides encounters with unique people, each with defining traits. Characters are consistent through the first few chapters; I’ll admit I have yet to read even half of what Vixyy has to offer, but I’m already in love with each and every one of them.
If you’re the type who loves old-school action and vigilante work, and (better yet) like the idea of Anthropomorphic characters playing those roles, then “Maryland Wolf Detective Agency” is your next stop! So grab that drink you’ve been craving and pull down the fedora over your eyes. It might be your one chance for some peace before you’re met with a barrel pointed at you, and an invitation for your own underpaying adventure.
