Often times, when you go to furry conventions or meetups there tends to be a large number of canine fursuiters. But why is that? No, it’s not because “well they are just popular, duh.” There is more to it than just that.
But why are they so popular?
Other than simply saying they are “mans best friend” and make the greatest companions IRL. After speaking with some people it goes deeper than that. A Facebook user by the name of Dakota Blackwolf states “My native spirit guide is a coyote and in my past life I was a wolf.” Elaborating on that, Dakota is Blackfoot Native American and was met by a white female wolf on their Spirit Quest.

For others, it’s simply they feel like that’s the best animal they connect to and feel like that suits there personality the best. I myself even had a canine fursuit when I was 15. Of course, since then I have lost connections with the character and have a few different suits but at the time being.
However, it’s not just dogs but other canines/Canidae as well such as foxes and wolves being the main ones. Very dog-like in nature as well as cat-like I can see why people would choose them.
But just dogs?
Of course, because there are so many canine fursuiters there’s many different styles of canine fursuits too including toony. kemono, and realistic. Many beginner fursuit makers also like to work on canines because its a great start to there fursuit building career.
Remember just because a species is popular that doesn’t mean its a bad thing. I will always encourage people to try other species, uniqueness, etc. But what it all boils down to is what YOU enjoy and what YOU want to represent yourself with.
